Our Cumbria Weekend
Home from a fabulous 4 days away in the Lake District National Park, staying in the Crown Hotel Wetheral. 19 walkers took part this year, spending an enjoyable time around the Northern Lakes, taking in Castlerigg to Rosthwaite passing through Ashness Bridge with views over Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite Lake and the River Derwent.
Our second walk a circular around Pooley Bridge, rising to the “Cockpit” a circle of stones dating back to the Bronze Age, a large flat area and clear entrances suggesting a meeting place for the scattered population. Views over Ullswater, dropping down towards the waters edge then following the lakeside path back into the village. The repairs to the bridge are still ongoing but the village has some lovely coffee shops and gift shops, frequented by all the group.
The last day before travelling home saw us walk up the Coledale valley starting from Braithwaite on the outskirts of Keswick following the mining track hugging the side of the fell to the dark face of Force Crag, the mine closed in 1991.
Some of the group went to the local pub and assisted the locals with their quiz night, much hilarity had by them all.
Overall a very enjoyable few days away, thanks to everyone who came along.
