This is a great walk with much of interest, history, including old quarry relics, fine woodland, a bubbling stream and great views, not least up the whole length of Llyn Padarn towards Snowdon and Elidir Fawr.
We start from the carpark walking along the side of the Llyn in a clockwise direction, soon picking up the old mainline railway trackbed before ascending to walk past ‘Union Rock’ (Craig yr Undeb) which was the secret meeting point for quarrymen who wanted to set up a union in the 1870’s. From here we walk through Brynrefail.. Here the ascent starts as we follow an old track/road past derelict homesteads and fields of a long gone hamlet and on into Llyn Padarn Parc which is prettily wooded to descend to the hamlet of Fachwen.
From Fachwen we enter Coed Dinorwic, dominated by sessile oaks, and proceed down through quarry workings to cross the clapper bridge across the spectacular waterfalls of Nant Fachwen and on to our lunch spot at the Viewpoint (on a clear day giving extensive views of Snowdon, Moel Cynghorion, Foel Goch, Foel Gron and Moel Eilio.
Shortly after we’ll descend to the Quarry Hospital (out of season so closed at the moment) and onto the V2 (Vivian Quarry) Incline Plane before dropping down to beside the Llanberis Lake Railway and back across the flat fields running between Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris with a fine view of Castell Dolbadarn and back to the cars.
